How to Design a Nursery Pink & Brown

Designing a nursery is an exciting project; you want it to be perfect for your new arrival. Pink and brown has become an increasingly common color scheme for nurseries. Soft, dusty pink gives a feminine touch to earthy, gender-neutral brown. Due to the adaptability of this color scheme, it is suitable for all ages, so there's no need to completely redecorate when the cot makes room for a bed as the child grows.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the walls in soft, dusty pink hues. For extra texture and interest, use a stripe paint technique to alternate pink and brown on the walls. Alternatively, use a very light, soft shade of brown on the walls for a more neutral background, and introduce pinks and browns with accessories and soft furnishings.

    • 2

Use wood flooring. A light wood such as pine will create a light, breezy atmosphere, whereas a darker wood such as dark oak will create a more dramatic effect. Wood flooring works well for a baby's room because it's so easy to clean -- an important factor in a nursery.

    • 3

Paint skirting boards and woodwork white to lift the color scheme and create a clean, fresh look. Stain skirting boards and woodwork with a brown wood stain for a more rustic feel. Paint the furniture white or leave it with a natural wood finish, depending on the desired finished effect.

    • 4

Stencil pink motifs onto white furniture or add pink drawer pulls and handles to wood furniture. This really combines the two colors; if you are using white painted furniture, it ties the white into the color scheme. Use the same motif, such as butterflies, flowers, stars or simple circles, throughout the room.

    • 5

Add self-adhesive murals to the walls or stencil your chosen motif in random groupings around the room. Letters that spell out the child's name on the wall above the crib make it a pretty focal point.

    • 6

Hang a brown blackout blind at the window to ensure daylight doesn't interfere with daytime naps. Soften the look with a soft pink fabric such as tulle or gossamer draped around a curtain pole and cascading down to the floor on either side of the window.

    • 7

Dress the crib with pink and brown bedding, and add a pink and a brown teddy to welcome the new arrival.

    • 8

Finish with a few pink and brown accessories. If you have a chair for nursing, add a soft pink cushion. Hang artwork on the walls featuring pink and brown colors, or create your own by making a collage of baby accessories on a pink and brown background.
