Painting Over Stained Laminate

Laminate is an inexpensive alternative to traditional wood and metal. It consists of recycled wood or sheets of wood pressed together between a thick plastic coating. It's possible to refinish laminate and stain it, just as you'd stain traditional wood. But if you've grown tired of your traditional, stained laminate your best option is to repaint it. This will cover the stain and give your laminate a new look. Plus, it allows you to reinvent the look of your cupboards or furniture in an afternoon.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray down the laminate with an all-purpose cleanser. Wipe it down with a soft cloth and allow it to air dry.

    • 2

Press a piece of 100-grit sandpaper to the bottom of an electric sander. Run the sander across the surface of the laminate, opening up the wood's grain to receive the paint. Repeat with 220-grit sandpaper.

    • 3

Wipe down the area with a tack cloth to remove the dust from sanding. Dip a paint roller in an oil-based primer and cover the stained laminate with an even coat of primer. Allow the primer to dry for four hours, or in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 4

Dip the paint roller in an oil-based paint and cover the stained area with a light coat in the shade of your choice. Allow it to dry overnight.
