How to Dress a Windowsill

A windowsill is the small ledge at the bottom of a window. While technically there is no wrong or right way to decorate this small display area, there are more and less effective ways. For example, while some homeowners might place a range of potted plants on a windowsill, which is a perfectly acceptable decision, such a display can look cluttered or too busy and add little to the room.

Instructions

    • 1

Look through your things and select interesting items to showcase on the windowsill. For example, antique lather brushes, porcelain eggcups, antique skeleton keys or glass bottles are all suitable for a windowsill. Visit vintage stores, flea markets and garage sales to look for unusual items to create a full-bodied display.

Arrange your items in groups along the windowsill. Keep the collection displayed in a highly organized way. Display the tallest items in the center and arrange the others in descending height on either side. If you're displaying items that are all the same height, group them together in clusters of three or five.

Add a decorative trim in the form of a ribbon or flower in a shade that matches the color scheme of the room. For example, if you're displaying a row of antique lather brushes, a small bit of ribbon wrapped around each one in a simple bow or knot is one way to incorporate the color scheme of the room within the display. Alternatively, if you're displaying porcelain eggcups, short-cut flowers in a color that matches the room can be displayed in every other one.
