How to Match Curtains With Sofas

The living room is one of the most beloved rooms of the house: its design should be soothing and its colors inviting. When it comes to creating a harmonious color scheme in a room as important as the living room, matching the curtains to the couch might seem like a no-brainer. However, you don't want it to look like you decorated your living room yourself; you want it to look like you hired a decorator. Creating a balanced look between the couch and the curtains is imperative when fashioning such an atmosphere.

Instructions

    • 1

Walk around your living room. Write down the three major colors of the room's color scheme. Circle which of those colors are present in the couch.

    • 2

Select drapes that match one of those three colors, but preferably a color that does not match the dominant color of the couch. For example, if you have a blue and white striped couch as part of a blue, white and yellow color scheme in your room, any of those colors will work for your drapes. But, if you have a solid blue couch with white throw pillows as parts of a blue, white and yellow color scheme, white or yellow drapes are the best choice, so as not to make the room look overly "matchy."

    • 3

Walk around the room and pick a design style that summarizes the decor of the room in one word, be it "eclectic" or "traditional" or "modern."

    • 4

Select drapes that directly reflect that design style in the color you chose in Step 2. For example, if you have a traditional decor style, standard understated drapes are fine. However, a romantic decor style would call for sweeping drapes that pile up in puddles on the floor. Choosing drapes in this manner will help pull the entire look of the room together.
