How to Arrange a Sofa & Recliner With a Fireplace

When decorating a room with a fireplace, one of the final tasks is arranging the furniture. In the absence of a television, the fireplace tends to be the focal point of a room. That means that you can work your way out from the fireplace when determining the manner in which you would like to arrange your sofa and recliner. There are several options for arranging a sofa and recliner in a room with a fireplace.
  1. Recliner

    • You can position the recliner in one of two ways: in a manner that allows a line of sight to the fireplace, or in a way that allows you to enjoy the warmth of the fireplace without seeing it. If you do not plan on installing a television over or near the fireplace, then this helps to broaden your choices. A fireplace can give off a tremendous amount of heat, so if you want to place your recliner facing the fireplace feet first, then you will want at least three or four feet of distance. Placing the recliner along the side of the fireplace will allow you to enjoy the fire and heat simultaneously.

    Sofa

    • With a sofa, you have two options for placement near a fireplace. You can have the sofa looking directly at the fireplace, or you can have it perpendicular to the fireplace. The manner in which you arrange the sofa will dictate how you place the recliner. If you are decorating a sitting room or any room that does not have a television, then having the sofa facing the fireplace can be a good choice. If there will be a television in the room, then having the sofa perpendicular to the fireplace and facing the television allows you to use both focal points of the room.

    Sofa Facing Fireplace

    • When it comes to bringing the sofa and recliner together in a fireplace room, you base the layout around the sofa. If the sofa is facing the fireplace, then you can have the recliner adjacent to the fireplace or turned as if it were in a corner. The corner approach allows the person on the recliner to fully address the people in the sofa and feel the effects of the fireplace.

    Perpendicular Sofa

    • A sofa that is perpendicular to the fireplace allows you to place the recliner with its back to the fireplace. This allows the people on the sofa to enjoy the full ambiance of the fire place while the person in the recliner has the full benefit of the fireplace heat without the glare from the fire. If the sofa is perpendicular to the fireplace, then another option for the recliner is opposite the sofa but facing the fireplace.
