Disco Room Ideas

When you decide to use a 1970s disco decor theme in one of your rooms, it is important to get the basic elements right. Some decorating ideas are instantly associated with the idea of a disco while others are subtle but necessary. Whether your disco room is permanent or temporary, there are decorating elements you will need to make it complete. Be sure to check all safety warnings for any mechanical equipment you decide to use, and have a professional install them if necessary.
  1. Mirrored Ball

    • A spinning mirrored ball is so identified as a disco decoration that is often referred to as a "disco ball." For the proper effect, make sure you get a ball that has a motor in the base that makes it slowly spin. Mount the ball in the middle of the room ceiling and shine two white spotlights on it as it spins. You can enhance the effect by putting a dimmer switch on the rest of the lights in the room and bringing those lights down when you turn on the mirrored ball spotlights.

    Fog

    • Stage fog was an important part of a 1970s disco just as it has been an important part of dance clubs ever since. Fog machines range from 400 to 700 watts, according to GotFog.com. For a disco room, a 400-watt fog machine will work. Be sure you get one with a remote switch that you can control so it does not create too much fog. Get a water-based fog with an additional scent such as lemon or orange.

    Floor Tile

    • One of the subtle parts of a disco is the floor. If you are setting up a disco room, then you need a black-and-white checkered floor. It can be made of tile, but you could save money and make it from linoleum. Try to create a black-and-white checkered dance floor in the middle of your room surrounded by another type of flooring to help offset the dance floor from the rest of the room.

    Walls

    • The more mirrors on your disco room's walls, the better. If you can safely install mirror panels that cover all of your walls, then that will enhance the effect.

    Strobe Lights

    • The other essential lighting effect in a disco room is strobe lighting. You can get inexpensive strobe lights and put them on a power strip to turn them all on and off at the same time. If you set the strobe lights to work at different speeds, then you can create a more authentic effect.
