Things to Put in Foyers

The foyer is the first room guests will see when they enter your home. You want the foyer to make an impression and become a memorable area of the house. The room should have enough room to move around, but it should look inviting because it represents the rest of the house. The room is a preview of what waits for guests in other rooms.
  1. Furniture

    • Narrow hallway foyers need a wall table to set down your keys or purse when you come in from the outside. You can use a half moon table, which will fit snugly against the wall. If the foyer is large enough, you can place a pedestal table in the center with a colorful floral arrangement to accent the room. On one wall, you can put two wing back chairs with a small table in between. A small vase with a flower arrangement or a small potted plant can sit on the table with a lace dolly. If you have the room, you can use a sitting couch in a foyer.

    Flooring

    • Foyer flooring highlights the area. In a large foyer or a hallway foyer, you can use laminate flooring or real hardwood flooring. In a narrow foyer, use a rug runner to provide some protection to the floor from the outside elements. If the room is large enough, use a round or rectangle oriental area rug to accent the room.

    Lighting

    • If the foyer is small and narrow, you can use wall sconces for lighting. If the ceiling in the foyer is high, you can decorate with a chandelier or some type of ceiling lamp with a down rod so the light is within 8 feet from the floor. Lighting doesn’t need to be bright, but it should add a soft lighting to the room.

    Accessories

    • Add some accents to the walls. A foyer with bare walls isn’t inviting. Art work or family photos in decorative frames can adorn the walls. On the wall that people will see first, you can place a large mirror on the wall. On the wall directly across from the mirror, place your art work or family photos. When people wall into the foyer, they will see the mirror on one wall displaying the art work on the other side of the room.
