Light Blue Basement Living Room Ideas

Situating the living room in the basement transforms this often neglected space into a delightful area to relax and socialize in while creating extra space upstairs. Cool light blue is a pleasant color choice for a room that usually has little or no natural light, and when combined with fresh, clean white and splashes of warmer colors, your basement will be transformed into a stylish and inviting living space.
  1. Walls and Ceiling

    • Paint the ceiling white to give the room a sense of height and space. Use white gloss paint on the skirting boards, the door, and woodwork, such as banisters on the stairs, to give the room a fresh, clean look. Paint the walls light blue. An eggshell or satin-finish paint gives the walls a low sheen to reflect maximum light around the room. For extra interest, use a light blue patterned wallpaper to create an accent wall either where the TV or the main sofa is positioned.

    Floor

    • Lay a light wood floor such as pine with a polished finish to reflect light. For a softer feel, use a natural fiber seagrass, sisal, hemp or jute carpet. The light, neutral colors of a natural fiber carpet create a sense of space and complement the light blue color scheme of the room. Lay dark blue rugs to give the light blue color scheme a sense of depth.

    Faux Window

    • Basements often lack windows, so create a faux window to give the feeling of looking out on a bright, sunny day. Purchase a large framed cork board, or two if you want a really large "window," and paint the frame with white gloss paint. Use pin tacks to attach a large poster featuring a scene such as a country garden to the cork board. Cut wood strips, available from craft shops, into appropriate lengths to create window pane separators, paint with white gloss, and glue over the poster. Hang the cork board window on the wall and attach a curtain pole to the wall above it. Hang softly-draped light blue sheer curtains, such as tulle or gossamer, from the curtain pole to finish the effect.

    Furniture and Accessories

    • Combine light blue and white sofas and armchairs. Pile on plenty of cushions in a range of light blues, white and dark blue to create a cozy, inviting effect. Add a splash of color with a bright red or sunny yellow cushion. White-painted wood furniture will add to the light, breezy atmosphere, but a natural wood finish will give the cool color scheme a sense of warmth. Add tabletop accessories, such as fresh-cut or artificial yellow flowers in blue glass vases for a summery feel and candles in a range of blues and white, for soft, romantic evening lighting.

    Lighting

    • Floor spot lights are an effective way to add light to a room that has little or no natural light. Use ceiling spotlights for a modern look, but add tabletop and standard lamps for softer, warmer lighting in the evenings. Position track lights above areas such as the sofa, shelves and wall art.
