How to Dress Up a Window With Two Different Scarf Colors

Window scarves make an elegant decoration for bare windows--particularly larger picture windows and long, tall, old-fashioned windows. Window scarves can be draped over windows to emphasize their length as well as serve as a frame for whatever the window reveals of the outside. Window scarves should also be used to emphasize the color scheme in a room. This is tricky if your color scheme is complex, and why picking two or more scarf colors may be necessary.

Instructions

Select scarves in colors that relate to the colors of the room. Choose two or more colors from the color scheme of the room, or a neutral color and the dominant color in the room. For example, in a room where the color scheme is cranberry and cocoa with accents of beige and tan, you may select one scarf in a neutral beige color and one in cranberry, a scarf in cranberry and one in cocoa, or any combination of the various tones. If you're uncertain about the colors, pick two scarves that have a relationship on the color wheel-- like colors found opposite of one another on the color wheel (complementary colors) or colors found side-by-side on the color wheel (analogous colors).

Select the appropriate type of material for the room. Small, dark rooms will benefit from a sheer material that will allow light to pass through them while large, bright rooms will benefit from a heavy, stately, opaque material.

Wrap the scarves around the window rod. Experiment with the placement of the scarves so that each scarf is visible. There are many ways to do this. Some treatments involve draping the scarfs together on the rod, lined up so they appear as two stripes of color on the rod. Similarly, you can curl the scarves around one another so that they appear to be a fabric twist hung above the window. You may also allow one scarf to hang from the rod and pull the other scarf up above the window, attaching it to the wall above the window in a peak formation. For a very large window, use multiple scarves of each color for a fuller, more stately arrangement.

Choose the appropriate tiebacks for the scarves, if you plan to use them. The tiebacks should match the scarves. The tieback may of any style; it could be a ribbon of the same color of the one of the scarves or a decorative rope tieback. Alternatively, attach hooks to the wall so the scarves may be looped around them rather than tied.
