Instructions

  1. Make the Boxes

    • 1

Cut 20, 6-inch-long pieces of 1-by-6 boards. Two pieces will form the top and bottom of each of the boxes.

    • 2

Cut 20 more 1-by-6 pieces, each 8 inches long. Two pieces are for each box, forming the sides of the boxes.

    • 3

Apply wood glue to one of the cut edges of a 6-inch piece of 1-by-6 wood. Stand the piece on its side, with the glued edge facing the side.

    • 4

Align one 8-inch 1-by-6 piece on either side of the 6-inch piece. The glued end should meet the bottom side edge of one of the 8-inch pieces.

    • 5

Hammer finishing nails through to connect the 8-inch piece to the 6-inch piece. Glue the other end of the 6-inch piece, and attach the other 8-inch piece to that side in the same fashion.

    • 6

Glue the two cut edges of another 6-inch piece, and slide it perpendicularly in between the opposite ends of the 8-inch sides. Hammer nails through the 8-inch sides into the 6-inch piece.

    • 7

Construct the other nine boxes following these steps.

    • 8

Use a palm sander to sand all edges and surfaces of the boxes after the glue dries.

    Connect the Boxes

    • 9

Lay the 1-foot by 1-foot plywood board on a flat surface.

    • 10

Arrange several -- but not all -- of the boxes on the plywood, and then arrange the extra ones to overlap over the sides of the boxes, with the design flowing off of the plywood board. The goal is to arrange them in an abstract, geometric orientation. Determine which arrangement looks the best.

    • 11

Lift one box out of its place, turn it over and glue the edges. Set the box back down on the board to dry. Do this with all of the boxes on the plywood board, and then leave it to dry for a few hours.

    • 12

Turn the dried unit over, and hammer finishing nails through the back of the plywood board and into the edges of the boxes.

    • 13

Turn the unit over again with the plywood board on the work surface.

    • 14

Connect one of the extra boxes to one of the boxes attached to the board. Apply glue at the point of contact, and turn the unit to hammer it in place. Do this for all of the remaining boxes, and leave them to dry.

    • 15

Stain or paint the unit to coordinate with the bathroom’s décor.

    • 16

Screw hooks into the underside of the unit. Drill small pilot holes and twist them into the holes.

    • 17

Place essential items in and on the cubicle shelves. Lotions, hair products and accessories, combs, brushes, cosmetics, unopened soaps, clean washcloths rolled up and toilet tissue rolls are some items that will fit well in the small bathroom’s organizer. Hang such items as a blow dryer, salon straightener and small towels on the hooks below.
