Paint bright colors like yellow, light green and vibrant white on the walls to make rooms feel larger than they really are. Dark and saturated colors like deep reds, oranges and browns can make rooms feel smaller than they are, especially when paired with dark wood floors.
Use enough lighting to keep the room bright if you don’t get a lot of natural light. Arrange a combination of overhead lighting, floor lights and lamps to light different areas of the room evenly and avoid dark spots. Floor lights in the corners of the room, drawing attention away from the center of rooms, will make the rooms feel bigger as well.
Put items away when you aren’t using them to keep clutter to a minimum. Keeping too many knick-knacks and unnecessary items will make your room feel less organized and considerably smaller. This is true in all rooms, and is especially important in the kitchen, where items like stand mixers, toasters and juicers can add up to make a lot of visual clutter.
Place a light colored rug in front of your sofa in the living room or a runner in the kitchen or hallway to help open up the room and break up dark wood floors.
Hang window coverings like vertical blinds or draperies with a vertical stripe instead of a horizontal stripe or pattern. Vertical blinds or draperies will extend the visual space in a room and make it feel larger.
