What Carpet Goes With Burgundy Painted Walls?

Burgundy is a gorgeous, elegant color that can make many rooms seem rich and bold. However, the color of the walls can easily become a burden if paired with the wrong carpet. Pick the color of your carpet carefully — look to the color wheel for ideas, or choose from a range of neutral colors.
  1. Color Wheel Relationships

    • Burgundy is a dark, red wine color. To create burgundy with paint you'd mix red with a little bit of blue, so the paint looked red-black or red-nearly-purple. On the color wheel, burgandy is positioned across from the greens (the complement of burgundy), between the orange-golds on one side and eggplant on the other — these would be the analogous color pairs of burgundy. To choose a color carpet with a relationship to burgundy on the color wheel, select one of these complementary or analogous shades.

    Useful Neutrals

    • The colors that have a relationship to burgundy on the color wheel are all intense, bold hues that won’t appeal to a lot of people. For a less dramatic color scheme, choose from a range of neutrals such as cream, white, gray or brown. A neutral color is the conservative choice but will likely stand the test of time, so you can continue to enjoy your carpet for years to come.

    Room Size and Light

    • As you decide which color of carpet to pair with your walls, take into account the size of the room and the amount of daylight it sees. Smaller rooms will need a lighter colored carpet to offset the dark richness of the walls. Larger rooms may benefit from darker carpets, that will make the room seem more intimate.

    Samples

    • Take home samples of the carpets you’re considering. Don’t make your choice until you’ve seen the carpet in the room. Hold the carpet samples against the burgundy walls. Before making your final choice, view the carpet samples in a range of light, from daytime sun to lamplight in the evening.
