Decorative Ideas for a Headboard in a Teen Girl's Room

A headboard can be the focal point of a bedroom and set the tone for the rest of the room's style. Think beyond traditional wooden headboards to add an unusual or funky aspect to your teen girl's bedroom. She'll appreciate the one-of-a-kind look that it transforms it into her personal, expressive space.
  1. Storage Cube Headboard

    • Stack or hang sleek wooden storage cubes on the wall behind the head of the bed. These cubes are usually rectangular or square with rounded corners. Your teen can use the cubes to hold her journal, cell phone, alarm clock and decorative objects. Choose them in a color or finish that fits the decor of the rest of the room or sand them and paint them yourself to use a custom color. Arrange them in any way you like, to fit the area directly above and next to the bed, or allow your teen to do the arranging. If you stack them rather than hang them, she can rearrange the cubes whenever she wants to change the look.

    Memory Board Headboard

    • Cut a section of rolled cork to fit the area behind the bed and glue it in place with heavy-duty adhesive, or purchase adhesive squares of cork and place them together to form the headboard. Apply a spray adhesive to the entire cork surface and cover it with decorative scrapbook paper or pieces of colored tissue paper. Match up the patterns and colors of the paper or patch them together randomly to combine a few different styles. Your teen can pin photos, posters, newspaper clippings or letters on the headboard to change the look whenever she likes.

    Painted Headboard

    • Paint a faux headboard by painting a design directly onto the wall behind the bed. Use stencils to repeat a pattern or draw a design free-handed with pencil before painting over it with paint. Use a paint color slightly darker or lighter than the wall color to create an embossed effect or use a contrasting color color to create a headboard design that pops. Use stencils or hand-drawn shapes like hearts, flowers, initials or random geometric shapes.

    DIY Fabric Headboard

    • Create an inexpensive but luxurious headboard with a pre-cut sheet of MDF or particle board. Cut a piece of fabric larger than the face of the board. Use a staple gun to staple a layer of cotton or polyester batting over the face and lay it batting-side down onto the backside of the piece of fabric. Pull the ends of the fabric over the sides of the board and staple them onto the back. Hang the board onto the wall or drill holes to attach it to the bed frame with bolts.
