How to Decorate a Narrow Entryway

The entryway is the first glimpse visitors will receive when visiting your home, so it makes a powerful initial impression. It's also one of the most overlooked places when it comes to decorating. Even a cramped, narrow entryway can seem welcoming and open with the right decorative accents. From the color palette you choose to the furniture you use in the space, keep some ideas in mind when decorating this front entryway.

Instructions

Use color to define the space. There are basically two options you can use for this area. You can choose a neutral palette that's clean and inviting without overwhelming the hallway. The alternative is to use one wall as a high impact focal point. For example, you can paint one wall of the hallway in a vibrant color that grabs attention, or you can hang a printed wallpaper to define the space.

Hang mirrors to make the space seem grander. Narrow entryways can sometimes make a home feel cramped. Using mirrors to reflect the opposite wall gives the appearance of width, making the hallway seem more open and inviting. Choose mirrors that coordinate with your home decor. For example, a traditional home might feature gold framed mirrors. More contemporary style might feature frameless mirrors in geometric shapes.

Furnish the space with minimal furniture. This doesn't mean you shouldn't have any furniture; in fact, this could make the place seem more narrow than it is. Simply choose pieces with refined lines and shallow surfaces. Look for multipurpose pieces. For example, a table with drawers or shelves for storing items such as keys, or that feature compartments for umbrellas and hooks for coats.

Use the vertical space to make the hallway as functional as possible. For example, hang shelving high up on the walls for storing books, picture frames or collectibles. Hang artwork at varying heights to make the hallway seem larger and less narrow.

Use strategic lighting to brighten the entryway. For example, you can hang a chandelier over the front of the entryway, or use it to merge the spaces between the narrow entryway and the home's front room. Another option is to mount sconces flush against the wall to illuminate the space, while acting as charming and inviting decorative features in this narrow area.
