Separating the Area in a Studio Apartment By Using a Curtain

If you've ever lived in a studio apartment, you know the importance of private areas. As much as you might enjoy the open concept, there are times when you are sleeping, preparing for the day or studying when a little privacy would go a long way. There are a number of easy ways to achieve a measure of privacy, each using the simplicity of a curtain.

Instructions

Attach a light, high-tension wire at the top of the wall and across the area where you would like to create seclusion. Use an aircraft cable that is coated in plastic if you want a wire that won't droop, will last as long as you need it to and allow for easy movement of the curtain.

Install a standard, heavy-duty curtain rod. Hang sturdy brackets on both sides of your space and install a rod that works with your decor. If you want a soft, dreamy area, opt for an off-white rod. If you have a Tuscan-style room, go with a brass, black or copper curtain rod. If your studio is ultra-modern, opt for an industrial-looking chrome rod. Hang the curtain rod three-quarters of the way up the wall to gain privacy but allow light to spill over.

Use a tension rod for a small space where lightweight curtains are sufficient. Move the tension rod from one area to another, as needed. If the space is wider than 36 inches, go with a sturdier rod that is held by brackets.

Install a large canopy hoop on the ceiling above the area you would like to block if you're looking for privacy around your bed or a reading nook. A large hoop will accommodate a large, sheer canopy. Either allow it to drape around the space or, if you want it to remain in a stationary position, attach it to small screw-in hooks in the floor.
