How to Redo My Bedroom in Blue & Black

Blue -- with the exception of navy blue -- is a calming, serene color that's ideal for the bedroom. When combined with sophisticated black, a light bright blue creates a striking and attractive effect. This color scheme is gender-neutral and can be used to create a soft, nature-inspired room or a more modern, vibrant space.

Instructions

Paint the walls blue. Choose a light shade of blue rather than darker hues, as these will not work well with black. Use delicate pastel blues to create a soft, feminine ambience. For a more forceful and bold impression, use a bright blue such as turquoise or cerulean. When using bright shades, paint one or two walls, depending on the size of the room, with a light, neutral color such as light mocha or rich cream. This tones down the brightness of the blue and prevents the overall appearance of the room from becoming overpowering.

Create an accent wall with wallpaper. Choose a blue that complements the paint color and features a black pattern. Choose a flowing, nature-inspired pattern for a feminine country-cottage atmosphere or a prominent geometric pattern for a more modern vibe. Alternatively, utilize a faux paint effect such as sponge painting. Simply paint a blue base coat on the wall, then apply faux technique glaze to a natural sponge with a paintbrush, and dab it over the base coat.

Hang a black blackout blind at the window. Attach a curtain pole above the window and drape sheer fabric around the pole to soften the effect of the blind. Gossamer, tulle and shimmera are all suitable draping fabrics. To ascertain the length of material needed, drape a piece of string over the pole, in the same way as you would the material, and have it reach down to the floor on either side of the window. Remove the string and measure it. Drape two pieces of material over the pole, one black and one blue. Loosely wind the two colors of fabric around each other and drape.

Add black furniture to the room for a strong, striking and modern effect, or stain existing wood pieces black to give new life to old furniture. Use wood furniture with a natural finish for a softer, more rustic feel, or use white furniture for a clean, fresh look.

Dress the bed in a range of blues and black. Add plenty of cushions for a cozy, inviting look. Combine pastels and brighter hues with black, and mix different textures, such as cotton, velvet, silk and corduroy. Add a black blanket over the foot of the bed and introduce further black accents with a black canopy. Attach a wire gossamer hanger to the ceiling above the head of the bed, measure from the hanger across to the sides of the bed and down to the floor. Cut the required length from the same fabric used for the windows, and drape it over the hanger, positioning the fabric so it fans out pleasantly around the bed.
