How to Hang a Valance and Curtains on Two Rods

If you want to install curtains and a valance, you typically need two rods to do so. When selecting curtain rod sets — which include the curtain rods, support brackets and hardware — for installing your curtains and valance, you must purchase sets in different sizes. The valance is meant to cover up the curtains, so you need a rod that is longer and holds the valance further from the window. For this reason, the rod set you buy for the curtains should be simple and strictly utilitarian, rather than decorative.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure 2 inches from either side of the top of the window. Place the curtain rod supports for the curtains at these points and mark the screw holes in each support with a pencil so you know where to drill.

    • 2

Repeat this process for the valance rod, but measure and mark the spot 4 inches from either side of the window. These markings should be placed 1 to 2 inches above the ones you made for the curtain rod.

    • 3

Install the rod supports for the curtain rod. When installing the screws, don't tighten them all the way until you have all of the screws in the wall. The support may shift as you install each screw, so it is best to tighten each one most of the way and then hold the support in place as you tighten each screw.

    • 4

Install the supports for the valance rod. Use the same method you used for the curtain rod supports.

    • 5

Slide the curtains onto the rod and then place the rod on the supports. There may be an additional screw in the support that holds the rod in place so that it doesn't slide around as you adjust the curtains. See the curtain rod packaging for details.

Slide the valance onto its rod and place the rod on the supports. After both rods are secured to the supports, adjust the curtains and valance so they are all centered to your liking.
