How to Get a Proper Size Painting for a Wall

Choosing wall art is sometimes overwhelming due to the price of art and trying to figure out what will look best in the space. In most situations, a single, large piece of art will look better than several pieces of art. However, if you cluster art properly and use coordinating colors, you can create a look that seems professionally designed. Always hang art at eye level so it draws attention.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose art that is two-thirds the size of any furniture below it. For example, if you are hanging art above a couch or dresser, the art should not be two-thirds longer than the furniture. This includes either a single piece of art or large piece of art.

    • 2

Select a long, panoramic-style piece of art if you want to give your room a wider look. If you can't find a long piece of art that you like, create the illusion with a row of coordinating art pieces lined up along the wall.

    • 3

Cluster smaller pieces of art together so they give the appearance of being one piece of art. The eye will be drawn to the art as a group. For example, place one large piece of art on the wall and hang two smaller ones to the right of it if the art is vertical, or under it if it is horizontal. This allows you to pick art in varying sizes but still fill the wall.

Use long, tall, vertical pieces of art only in rooms with high ceilings. They will make the room seem taller in this situation. However, they can make the room seem more compact in rooms with lower ceilings.
