How to Display Fresco Paintings in the Home

Fresco paintings are made by adding plaster to your wall and painting a design with water-based pigments. These paintings were used during Roman times and often consist of wall murals. Because the painting is applied directly onto the plaster, the painting becomes an integral part of the wall until you remove the plaster. Display your own set of fresco paintings to add color and interest to a bare wall.

Instructions

  1. On the Wall

    • 1

Select a room that can benefit from the addition of color and wall interest. Plan on adding your fresco painting directly to the wall, which is the most common and natural way to display a fresco.

    • 2

Choose a theme for your painting. Draw a sketch of what the painting will look like.

    • 3

Apply a coat of plaster to the wall. Let the plaster dry completely until it is hard. Add another coat of plaster.

    • 4

Apply another layer of plaster. Paint directly onto the wet plaster. Add plaster in sections so you can finish each portion of the painting before the plaster dries. The painting will dry and use the wall as its display method.

    • 5

Add molding around the painting. Decorative molding can enhance the look of a fresco painting and create a built-in appearance. Use molding between two or three paintings to make an attractive display reminiscent of an art gallery.

    Loose Painting

    • 6

Do one or more small fresco paintings on sturdy bases other than a wall, such as thick cardboard or trays, as described on the website Crayola.com. Or purchase fresco-style paintings available online or from other venues.

    • 7

Separate the painting from its current base or container with a small chisel if you want to display it in a picture frame or a shadow box. Select a frame or shadow box that matches in color and style with the painting. Make sure that the frame is wide enough to insert the painting inside.

    • 8

Prepare the display item that you will use to mount your painting. Remove the glass from the picture frame or shadow box. Insert the painting inside the frame or shadow box.

    • 9

Hang the frame in a prominent location in the room. Attach a light over the painting to highlight it even more. Group fresco paintings that have similar themes together to fill a hallway or wall.

    • 10

Place other items in the shadow box that relate to the fresco painting. Hang the shadow box over a fireplace or a bare wall.
