Use a color wheel to find coordinating colors. For example, colors that are in the same hue, such as pale blue and navy, are monochrome colors and can work well together. Neighboring colors are called analogous colors and increase the mood in the room. For example, if you use red and orange, you increase the warm, vibrant feel to the room. Whereas, if you use blue and green analogous colors, you increase the cool, tranquil feel. You can also use contrasting colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel, such as yellow and purple. These make each other stand out more.
Mix and match furniture according to styles. Choose one style for the room and stay true to it in your decor. If you are doing an edgy, contemporary decor, you don't want a rustic, leather couch paired with an artistic, modern, microfiber loveseat. If you are going for a romantic feel to the room, you can try a soft white couch paired with a chaise lounge as a loveseat.
Consider the shape and size of the loveseat and couch when purchasing them. Pick pieces that don't overwhelm each other with their contrasting size and shapes. If the other parameters are working, you can sometimes use a long, flat couch with an overstuffed chair; however, most of the time this look won't work together. For example, if you find an overstuffed loveseat that you like, do not pair it with a futon-style couch. Choose a couch that is soft, although it doesn't have to be overstuffed like the chair.
