How to Make Small Bathrooms Look Big

The unfortunate reality of a cramped bathroom is an issue many homeowners and apartment dwellers face. It doesn’t matter if the facility is a guest bathroom or the master en suite, having a small bathroom is a stylistic dud. Improper lighting, a cavernous color scheme and clutter all make your already cramped space feel even smaller. Use the right paint colors, choose fixtures carefully, and remove unnecessary objects from your diminutive bathroom to make it feel larger.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the bathroom’s clutter. Organize products used daily, including toothbrushes and deodorant, in small plastic bins. Place other items, including makeup or first aid products, into cabinets or drawers.

    • 2

Cover the walls with a light, bright color. Skip dark shades of brown, blue or red to avoid making the room feel claustrophobic. Opt for neutrals, or even white, to open up the space and make it feel airy and large.

    • 3

Choose accessories for the space that are the same color, or a shade lighter, than the paint. Decorating the room with artwork, rugs and hand towels in the same color family creates a flow in the space. To add dimension, use texture and simple patterns that won’t break-up the room’s color scheme.

    • 4

Install large mirrors in the room. Ornate mirrors, mirrored medicine cabinets or single panels all work to reflect more light in the room, creating the illusion that it's larger.

    • 5

Replace an oversize vanity with a smaller version or a pedestal sink. If you are losing precious storage, designate a cabinet or drawer in nearby room to house cleaning or beauty products.

    • 6

Replace a heavy, dark shower curtain with a model that is lighter or even transparent. Once again, if opting for color, stick to the room’s new scheme.
