How to Make Non-Rip Toilet Paper

Non-rip toilet paper is a classic gag gift made simply of rolled cloth on a toilet paper tube. As basic as it is, this novelty item costs more than you might expect. For fabric crafters, it's cheaper and easier to make your own unrippable toilet paper to annoy and delight the people in your life.

  • Fabric rotary cutter
  • Iron
  • Sewing machine
  • White thread

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the cotton cloth into strips 4 1/2 inches wide and as long as you can make them. Use the rotary cutter, cutting mat and yardstick carefully to ensure the straightest edges you can possibly get.

    • 2

Iron the cotton to remove all wrinkles. Pay special attention to any large wrinkles that may have occurred while the fabric was folded for storage.

    • 3

Stitch together the strips of fabric, end to end, to make one long, continuous strip. If the strips you have are different lengths, place the largest lengths you have at the end. To sew, overlap the edges of the strips by ¼-inch. Sew with a running stitch (straight stitch) on the sewing machine with white thread.

    • 4

Stretch out the cotton cloth on your work surface (table or floor) over waxed paper or newspaper. Apply liquid hem glue along the edge of the fabric on each side using your finger. Use the glue as sparingly as possible, but try to get a little along the entire length of the hem. If you encounter any loose threads as you go, trim them as close to the cloth as possible. Work with the cloth in segments on your work surface since you won't be able to stretch out the entire length at once. Let each portion dry fully before moving on to the next segment.

Stretch a 10-inch piece of string taut across one open end of the toilet paper roll. Use the ruler to measure the position of the string, and move it into the center so that it divides the open space into two equal half circles. Tape the string in place. Stretch the rest of the string down the side of the toilet paper tube, across the open bottom and up to meet itself on the other side. Use the marker to trace a line along the string where it stretches down the length of the tube; this will create a straight line across.

Remove the string. Apply a line of craft glue to the line on the toilet paper. Line up the edge of one end of the cotton strip with the line of glue, and then press it in place. Let dry for about 30 minutes.

    • 7

Roll up the toilet paper roll.

    • 8

Use the seam ripper to poke a line of perforation holes 4 ½ inches in. Do this again another 4 ½ inches in from that, and again another 4 ½ inches from that. Re-roll the paper.
