How to Divide a Room When Sharing with an Infant

If you have a new baby on the way and either don't have a spare room or wish to keep your infant close, you can divide your own bedroom to double as a nursery. You can do this in a way that is organized and not cluttered so that the room remains relaxing and functional. Plus, dividing your room to include space for your infant is also much less expensive than decorating a separate room as a nursery.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Clear an area in your bedroom where you've left the space in front of one of the walls entirely free. This may require rearranging the furniture in your room to accommodate the new baby's furniture.

    • 2

Place the infant's crib or bassinet against the middle of the wall. If you are using a bassinet or your crib doesn't have an attached changing table, you can purchase a separate one and slide it right up against the end of the crib or bassinet. Alternatively, you can purchase and install a wall-mounted changing table to save floor space.

    • 3

Move a small dresser that is designated for baby clothes on either end of the crib or bassinet. Place a hamper, also baby-exclusive, on the other end of the crib.

    • 4

Place small storage baskets on top of the dresser and fill them with various baby items, such as socks, diapers, wipes, lotions, creams, spit-up cloths and rattles. You may also want to install wall shelving to hold these types of items.

Install floor-to-ceiling curtains around the entire infant area to close it off and divide it completely from your own living space. You can also use a folding screen for this purpose, to at least have a visual barrier between you and the baby.
