How to Level Pictures on a Stairway

Hanging pictures in a stairway adds color and interest to this large and often unused space. If the pictures are not level and displayed properly, it makes the area seem unkempt and poorly designed. Displaying the pictures so they rise with the level of the staircase adds an attractive arrangement to the area. This is an ideal place to hang family portraits or a grouping of pictures with a theme.

Instructions

    • 1

Display your first picture near the first few lowest steps. Do this with a hammer and nail. Hang it so the center of the picture is about 58 inches from the step. Determine the distance with a measuring tape. This is at average eye level when ascending the staircase.

    • 2

Check that the picture is hanging straight by using a carpenter's level on the top of the picture frame once you hang it on the wall. Repeat this with each picture after you hang it.

    • 3

Use a measuring tape to determine an even amount of spacing between the pictures. Approximately 4 to 6 inches is appropriate spacing for a large grouping. If the stairwell is quite large, step up one or two steps to create the appropriate spacing. Make a pencil mark on the wall to indicate where the next picture goes.

    • 4

Position the next picture so that the bottom of the picture frame starts about one-third of the way up the length of the first photo frame. A quick way to do this is to measure the length of the frame and divide the number by 3. For instance, if the picture is 12 inches tall, start the next picture 4 inches higher than the first one.

    • 5

Place the remaining pictures up the stairway in the same manner by positioning each subsequent picture one-third higher than the previous one. This creates a level and attractive grouping of art on your stairway.
