Identify a focal point. In design, you find an item in the room to highlight. This may be a window, fireplace, artwork or even the television. Arrange the furniture around the focal point.
Add color. Color provides an instant pop of personality, but it also seems to be the most intimidating thing for the novice home designer to master. However, if you keep it simple, you are sure to not go wrong. Identify a patterned fabric in the room that you love. Use that fabric to identify three colors that complement the fabric, one of which is a neutral. You may choose to paint an accent wall in one of these colors or find colored accessories to brighten the room.
Add a piece of unique artwork. Few things can convey your personality like a piece of art can. Do you love beautiful landscapes? Or are you more avant-garde? Maybe you would prefer to decorate with the masterpieces of your children. Either way, the artwork provides an instant conversation starter and lets guests know what inspires you.
Find accessories that speak to you. You can add instant character on even the tightest budget with a few unique finds. Look for one-of-a-kind lamps, some cozy pillows and a funky clock. Spread a few books on a coffee table about topics you find intriguing. Incorporate natural elements such as a conch shell or piece of dried coral or a live plant. Never shy away from things that are meaningful to you such as a family antique or homemade quilt. Check out resale shops or discount stores for rare treasures on a budget.
