How to Create a Vintage Look on a Late Model White Refrigerator

White is a common color for appliances, however it often doesn't add anything to a home's decor. If you are trying to create a certain look in your home, you can cover up your fridge's plain appearance using a few techniques that create a brand new look. Choose colors and patterns from a different era to create a vintage look. This makes your fridge complement the rest of your decor so it isn't a giant, white box filling space in your kitchen.

Instructions

  1. Wallpaper

    • 1

Wash the fridge with trisodium phosphate. Rinse with plain water and dry thoroughly.

    • 2

Paint an adhesion primer designed for your fridge’s material. This creates a surface to which the wallpaper will adhere. Prime the handle if you want to upgrade it.

    • 3

Hang the wallpaper on the fridge using either self-adhering wallpaper or applying wallpaper paste. Cover the newly hung wallpaper with plastic and painter’s tape and spray paint the handle to coordinate. Try a yellow patterned wallpaper on the fridge and a brown handle for a '70s look.

    Paint

    • 4

Sand the fridge with wet dry paper until the surface is dull.

    • 5

Wash it with TSP, rinse and dry thoroughly.

    • 6

Apply an adhesion primer to the all the surfaces to give a surface for the paint to stick to.

    • 7

Leave it to cure according to package instructions, and then paint two coats of paint using gloss or enamel paint. Include the handle in the process. Try painting the fridge in a turquoise blue with a chrome handle for a vintage 1950s look.

    Vinyl

    • 8

Cut vinyl adhesive paper to fit the fridge.

    • 9

Wash the fridge with TSP, rinse and dry it carefully.

    • 10

Peel the back off the vinyl and stick it in place. This is the easiest method to change a fridge’s look. You can also find vinyl paper in patterns or images. Try paper with European country theme, such as a vineyard, for an Old World feel.
