How to Cover a Rough Ceiling

A rough ceiling is one with a popcorn finish. It gives the ceiling an irregular, textured look, and, over time, you may become tired of it. When you wish to cover your rough ceiling and give it a brand new appearance, use tissue paper and paint to give the room both a new texture and a new flush of color. Tissue paper is a wonderfully inexpensive way to give a room with a rough ceiling a brand new look.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe the rough ceiling using a clean cloth. This removes any dust.

    • 2

Tear the edges away from your tissue paper sheets. This removes the sharp edges and results in a more organic effect.

    • 3

Crumple up the tissue paper sheets, then smooth them out again. Crumple the paper tightly for a very textured look; crumple it only loosely for less texture.

    • 4

Put down a drop cloth to protect the room.

    • 5

Climb a ladder to reach the ceiling. Depending on the height of the room, you may only need a tall stepping stool.

    • 6

Paint a section of the wall that is larger than tissue paper sheet, using a paint roller and satin paint.

    • 7

Press the crumpled tissue paper to the wet paint, flattening it with your fingers. Immediately roll back over the tissue with your paint roller.

    • 8

Repeat Steps 6 and 7 until the ceiling is covered.
