How to Cover Basement Poles or Columns

Basement poles, also called basement columns or lally columns, are integral supports in the structure of your house. Unfortunately, the poles are not attractive, especially when you want to finish your basement. Whether the poles are made of wood or steel, a good solution is to cover them. You can cover your basement poles decoratively, or cover them for safety if you have a young child who plays in the basement.

Instructions

  1. Fabric Post Cover

    • 1

Cut long strips of fabric 3 to 5 inches wide with scissors.

    • 2

Hem the long edges by turning them down twice and sewing the edges flat with a sewing machine.

    • 3

Sew the strips together end to end.

    • 4

Glue one end of the strip to the bottom of the pole with hot glue.

    • 5

Wind the fabric around the pole, overlapping it so that none of the pole shows between the fabric strips. Secure the fabric as you go with dots of hot glue. Continue until the pole is completely wrapped.

    Foam Pole Covering

    • 6

Measure the pole’s height with a measuring tape. This is measurement A.

    • 7

Measure the pole’s diameter, and add 2 inches. This is measurement B.

    • 8

Use an electric carving knife to cut a rectangular piece of 3-inch foam that matches measurements A and B. While you can use a normal knife for this step, an electric carving knife gives you a cleaner cut.

    • 9

Wrap the rectangular piece of foam around the pole, so the foam covers the pole entirely. Ask a companion to help you hold the foam to the pole.

    • 10

Cinch cable ties around the foam to hold it to the pole. Depending on the height of the pole, you may need three to five ties to hold the foam securely.
