How to Decorate Midcentury Modern Homes With Walls of Glass

Midcentury modern homes often employ the use of glass as an architectural feature — whether it is large clear glass windows or frosted glass partitions. However, if your midcentury modern home wasn’t designed with glass walls, a contractor can install them in key places for you to give your home an authentic feel and architectural interest.

Instructions

    • 1

Partition rooms that are connected via large open areas with glass walls to add visual interest and depth to the room without making the space feel smaller. This works particularly well for separating a kitchen from a dining room or a kitchen from a den or living room.

    • 2

Put frosted glass walls between rooms and areas where you want more privacy without obstructing the natural flow of the room or blocking all of the light from another area. For example, frosted glass walls can be used to separate areas within a bathroom, especially if you have a large bathroom with a bathtub, shower and toilet area. Block glass walls are fairly common in bathrooms as well, as they provide maximum privacy without the heavy appearance of a full wall.

    • 3

Use half or three-quarters glass walls to divide areas like living rooms and offices. You can use clear glass walls or lightly frosted glass walls. Half or three-quarters walls can also be used to partition bathing and shower areas in bathrooms with open designs.

Install glass walls outdoors to designate spaces for certain purposes. If you have a swimming pool, a frosted glass wall is an excellent way to provide privacy for you and your neighbors when you are in the pool. You can also use glass walls to separate areas with different surfaces, like grass and cement, which will enhance the contrast of the different materials.

    • 5

Hang curtains or fabric over glass walls for maximum flexibility. During the day, glass walls will allow you to use all of the natural light coming from different rooms, which is especially important if certain areas of your house don’t get much natural light on their own. At night, you can draw the curtains for more privacy.
