How to Make Use of a Small Room With a Slanted Ceiling

There's no such thing as an unusable room. With homeowners creating functional, comfortable rooms -- from diminutive spaces beneath basement stairs and attics with barely enough headroom to kneel, never mind stand -- starting with an actual room means your battle is already half won. A ceiling with less than full height poses an additional challenge, but with a little imagination, you’ll find a variety of ways to make use of a small room with a slanted ceiling.

Instructions

Create a bedroom if you can sit up in bed without hitting your head on the sloped ceiling. Position the bed along an end wall, with one side under the slant, or place the headboard on the knee wall, so the slant rises directly overhead. Install shelving along the rest of the room's knee walls to use otherwise unusable floor space for storage. Replace dresser storage with decorative baskets and cubes on the shelving. Position wardrobe racks at either end of the room, as far under the slants as possible. Hide the racks behind curtains, if you wish.

Turn the area under the slope into a functional office or hobby workspace. Purchase a corner desk to make use of floor space approaching the slope, where you begin to lose the clearance you need to stand up comfortably. The desk maximizes your work area while preserving the more usable floor space for other furniture or uses. Create hidden storage by making your own desk or using file cabinets or bookcases to support a separate desktop.

Make a cozy hideaway from any room that has enough space for seating, a table and a lamp. Install bookcases under the slope to keep your library on display and easy to browse while maximizing floor space. Place a comfortable chair or divan along an end wall where ceiling height is greatest. Position the seating in the center of a very small room and line the walls with storage.

Give your kids or grandkids a clubhouse by converting a room that’s too small for practical use by adults into one that’s perfect for children. Furnish the room with floor pillows and pint-sized table and chairs. Make the clubhouse a low-tech, videogame-free zone devoted to board games and creative play. Place shelving or cabinets under the slope to store toys currently kept elsewhere in your home.
