Paint the walls a neutral, mid-tone color such as light brown, a deep tan or a soft moss green. Trim in eggshell will set off the walls nicely.
Cover the floors with carpeting in a neutral brown, or look for an area rug that combines browns, blues and shots of a contrasting color such as red, green or yellow.
Create a visual link between your couches with throw pillows in the same color. Barn red would be an excellent choice with navy and beige, as would a pine green. The pillows don't have to be the same fabric or shape, but should be the same color to harmonize the room.
Warm up your couches and tie them together with a wool or microfiber throw blanket draped across the back of each. Use a beige throw on the blue couch, and a navy throw on the beige couch.
Use the same color as your throw pillows in your decorating accents around the room for the best effect. A deep red lamp, red-patterned curtains and red candles grouped together will create a cohesive look to the room.
Add interest to your room with metal accents. Burnished brass, pewter or brushed tin will highlight the colors of your furniture and add contrast with shine. Use touches of metal in your picture frames, light fixtures and furniture.
