How to Trim an Octagon Window

An octagonal window is a decorative feature in a home, but trimming it is somewhat difficult. Unlike square and rectangle windows' trim, which can be cut and mitered to a 45-degree angle, trim pieces for an octagon-shaped window must be cut differently so they fit together well. Use pre-finished wood trim to border your unusually shaped window.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure each side of the octagonal window. Add 1 inch to each side's length.

    • 2

Mark each window side's measurement plus 1 inch on pre-finished wood trim that is 1-inch thick. Cut the eight pieces of trim.

    • 3

Cut each end of each trim piece to 22 ½ degrees with a miter saw. When you are done, the eight pieces should fit together as neatly as a picture frame.

    • 4

Apply a thin layer of wood glue to the back of one piece of trim. Press the trim piece to its corresponding side, or edge. of the window. Repeat the procedure for each other piece of trim.

    • 5

Allow the glue to cure according to the directions on its packaging.
