Remove everything from the closet.
Measure from one end of the back of the closet wall to the other using a measuring tape.
Cut one length of 1/2-by-2-inch board and one length of 1/2-by-4-inch board according to the measurements you found in Step 2 using a saw.
Sand both lengths of board using 100-grit sandpaper.
Wipe off any sawdust using tack cloth.
Paint both lengths of board using paint and a paintbrush.
Attach L brackets to the edge of each board using screws and an electric drill. Install an L bracket about every foot or 1.5 feet.
Attach the wider shelf to the wall where you want the shoes to rest by screwing the other half of the L-brackets to the wall.
Attach the narrower shelf to the wall 2 inches above the wider shelf. The shoes are held by inserting them toe-first into the 2-inch gap between the shelves and allowing them to hang freely.
Repeat this process for successive rows of shoes down the back of the closet wall.
