How to Make a Floral Basket

You can easily create a basket arrangement to brighten up your table or to give to someone you love. If you don't have the flowers you need in your own yard, look at garden centers, or even the grocery store, for the flowers and other floral supplies you may need. Look for flowers such as roses, lilies, gerbera daisies, ranunculus and alstroemeria. Pick one type of filler flower, such as statice, tiny asters or baby's breath. Finally, select one or two types of greenery. Leather leaf fern, ruscus, and eucalyptus are all popular and readily available.

Instructions

    • 1

Soak the floral foam in a sink full of tepid water for about 5 minutes. Place the foam onto a plastic basket liner or plate, and secure it with a loop of floral tape. Secure the liner or plate to the bottom of the basket with a loop of tape, as well.

    • 2

Place small pieces of greenery into the bottom of the foam, working your way around the basket so that you have pieces overlapping and slightly angled down over the edges of the basket.

    • 3

Select three to seven of each type of flower you wish to use in your arrangement. Use between three and five different types of flowers in varying colors, types and sizes. Snip them to the right height so that your overall arrangement will be as tall as you need it to be. Remove the leaves from the portions of the stems which are going to be put into the floral foam.

    • 4

Place one stem of the largest type of flower into the center of the basket so that it sticks straight up. Position the remaining four stems of this same large flower at an angle, scattered throughout the basket. You want each of the blooms to face out in a slightly different direction, balanced evenly throughout the arrangement.

    • 5

Fill in the basket with three to seven stems of each remaining type of flower, working from the largest blooms to the smallest. The smallest flowers can be used to fill in space between each of the larger blossoms; however, leave some room around each blossom so your arrangement isn't too crowded.

    • 6

Tuck in any additional stems of greenery that the arrangement needs. Position a bow on the handle of the basket if it has one, or you can wire the bow to a floral pick and stick it into the front or side of the foam to decorate the arrangement.
