How to Make a Tall Skinny Centerpiece

For a dramatic visual impact at the center of your table, choose a tall, skinny centerpiece. Not only are tall and skinny centerpieces striking, but they also can be less expensive than fuller, shorter arrangements. Tall centerpieces don't interfere with table conversations and allow more table space for culinary dishes at a buffet table. For an easy and inexpensive centerpiece that will impress your guests, create a tall, skinny arrangement.

Things You'll Need

  • Tall, skinny vase, at least 16 inches tall
  • Long-stemmed flowers
  • Long, thin branches (optional)
  • Beargrass or long reed-type grass (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Select a container or vase for your arrangement that's tall and slender. This is the foundation of your centerpiece and it should be at least 16 inches tall. It can be clear or opaque, although a clear container is more dynamic and will emphasize the arrangement above.

    • 2

Place the long-stemmed flowers into the tall, slender vase that's been filled with water. Appropriate flowers are lilies, delphiniums, cymbidium orchids or tulips. One flower stem in the vase creates an elegant minimalist look, while five to seven stems bursting from the tall vase gives a fuller, rounder appearance. To keep your centerpiece simple and dramatic, use a single flower variety.

Add one to three long, graceful tree or shrub branches to the arrangement, or, in place of the branches, use long arching grass leaves or one beargrass cluster. The addition of a few long leaves or branches replaces the need for filler greenery and complements the long-stemmed flowers without overwhelming them.
