How to Decorate With Floral Pomanders

Floral pomanders -- also called kissing balls -- are typically used for wedding decorations, but this unique way of arranging flowers can lend a regal elegance to any occasion or outdoor space. Arranged in a spherical shape using a wet moss ball, pomanders are surprisingly versatile in their decorative options. They can be hung on doorknobs or an used in bouquets. Floral pomanders fit in any season -- whether you're using roses in the summer or poinsettias in the winter.

Instructions

Work with a round blossom, anywhere from 1/2 inch to 2 inches in diameter. Factor in cost when making your flower selections. If you're making several pomanders, you'll want to choose an inexpensive, larger blossom such as a carnation. Consider the season and occasion as well -- roses bloom in the beginning of summer and are primarily used in weddings, whereas black-eyed Susans add rustic elegance to an early fall dinner party. Pick fragrant flowers for indoor events.

Use a variety of sizes and ribbons. Use smaller sized pomanders for favors, tree ornaments or place cards. Use large pomanders for centerpieces and outdoor decorations. Ribbons act as a hanger/handle and visual compliment to pomanders. Choose simple ribbon designs to keep the focal point on the flowers -- stripes and solids are ideal. Use satin for more formal occasions and twine or leather for casual or country occasions. You can also mount pomanders on tall sticks and place them into the lawn.

Hang the pomanders around your home or outdoor space. Doorknobs, wall hooks and banisters are ideal locations for indoor pomanders. Decorate outdoor furniture by hanging pomanders on chair backs. Use low hanging tree branches for outdoor events.

Preserve the flowers by watering the pomander once a day. Store the pomander in a cool place.
