How to Make an Evergreen Door Swag

Evergreen swags provide a natural touch to your seasonal decorations. Swags provide an attractive option for dressing up the tops of your interior and exterior door frames. You can also create matching swags for the windows or for the top of the fireplace mantel. The natural beauty of the evergreen limbs combined with the needles' fragrance awakens the holiday spirit. Pine and fir swags work well indoors, while spruce is better suited to outdoor use since it drops needles more quickly.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the top of the door frame, mantel or other area you want to swag. Triple this measurement to determine the length of the swag.

    • 2

Cut a piece of heavy florist's wire or 9 gauge wire to the determined length. Use wire snips to cut cleanly through the wire.

    • 3

Cut fresh evergreen branches down to an 18- to 30-inch length using sharp pruning shears. Select branches of similar thickness and lushness so the swag appears even.

    • 4

Lay a branch on either end of the wire. Place the branches so the needles point toward the end of the wire. Wrap an additional length of wire around each branch, securing it to the framework wire.

    • 5

Attach the remaining branches, working from the ends toward the center of the framework wire. Overlap each branch by 6- to 8-inches to camouflage the cut ends and so no part of the swag is thinner than the rest.

    • 6

Drape the swag over the mantel or door frame. Install hooks or nails in the wall to drape the swag over, if necessary.
