Group flowers in a floor vase that complement the room where you'll display the arrangement and the vase itself. For example, if you're using a colorful glazed vase, use at least three flowers that match a color in the vase, such as three red roses to go with a vase that has red on it. Make large blooms such as opened Star Gazer lilies, peonies, sunflowers, ginger or Heliconias the dominant flowers in your arrangement to balance the size of the floor vase.
Choose accent flowers for the arrangement that go with the primary flowers, the vase and the room. For example, pair daffodils with pink peonies in a cream, yellow, white, clear or gold floor vase to decorate a room that includes yellow and pink in its color scheme or create an unstructured bouquet of white roses with lilacs for a wedding in white and lavender.
Fill out the floor vase arrangement with filler flowers or foliage, if desired. Slip filler flowers between primary flowers. Filler flowers include small flowers such as St. Anne's lace. Large flowers such as sunflowers, hydrangeas and bird of paradise don't require filler flowers.
Add fern, bamboo, palm calla or magnolia leaves to border an arrangement in a floor vase. These bold forms of foliage balance an arrangement of big flowers and remain in proportion with the vase. Insert the greenery between the flowers and the edges of the vase at regular intervals, such as every 3 inches, and adjust the foliage so it frames the flowers.
Display the large floor vases in the desired place, such as centering one on each side of a staircase, at the head of a wedding aisle, at each side of an event stage — or in a group of three or four in front of a fireplace when the fireplace isn't in use.
