What Kind of Flowers Can I Use With a Calla Lily Centerpiece?

With graceful and elegant tubular-shaped flowers atop long, sturdy stems, calla lilies are a favorite for single flower floral arrangements. But when you wish to include them in a centerpiece, the flower will need to be combined with other flower types to create visual interest. Traditionally, calla lilies were only available in white, but new hybrid varieties are being developed, making a rainbow of calla lily colors available. The flowers you pair with calla lilies for your centerpiece should have texture and size that will complement the lilies and each other.
  1. Large Texture Flowers

    • Adding large flower blossoms that have visual texture to your centerpiece will accentuate the clean, smooth lines of calla lily blooms. Chrysanthemums, daisies, roses, tulips, peonies and tiger or Asictic lilies combined with calla lilies give a centerpiece visual interest. The quantity of large textured blooms in your arrangement should be equal or less than the calla lilies to prevent the texture from overpowering the centerpiece and the calla lilies.

    Small Texture Flowers

    • Similar to the effect large textured flowers have on arrangements containing calla lilies, smaller visually textured flowers do the same. Because the shape of calla lilies, round-shaped small flowers will complement the lily better than a more slender, trumpet shaped flowers such as snapdragons or penstamon. Button chrysanthemums, hydrangeas, Star of Bethlehem, veronica, freesia, rosebuds and orchids with calla lilies creates a delicate, elegant centerpiece. Use smaller flowers with larger flowers and calla lilies to design a bold arrangement.

    Fillers

    • Filler flowers and greenery are used in any floral arrangement to fill gaps and tie the flowers together. Whether you design your centerpiece with only calla lilies or add other blooms, adding long, arching grass, such as lily grass or bear grass, visually carries the eye to appreciate all the flowers and the entire design. Good filler flowers to accent calla lilies are baby's breath, asters, heather, statice, wax flowers and bunches of berries.

    Color Scheme

    • The color scheme you select for your centerpiece will have as dramatic an impact on the viewer as the flowers you use. A single colored arrangement with different shades of the color, called monochromatic, is subtle and classic. Add only one color to the scheme, in moderation, and the primary colored flowers become highlighted. Centerpieces with several colors need to have the colors balanced within the arrangement. Check that no one color is cluster in one area more than in the rest of the centerpiece.
