What Flower Can I Mix With Calla Lilies in a Centerpiece?

Long, slender stems support the simple tubular-shaped callalily flower (Zantedeschia aethiopica) that is frequently used in tall flower arrangements. For centerpieces where the arrangement must be low, combine the lily with other blooms. The size, shape and color of the flowers you mix with callalilies should complement and blend creating a visually pleasing centerpiece for your table.
  1. Shape

    • The shape of the flower blossoms you mix with callalilies should be round or circular accenting the lily’s slim, tubular shape. Roses, daisies, chrysanthemums, hydrangeas, zinnias, asters and day or Asiatic lilies blend well with callalilies in an arrangement. Flowers, such as snapdragons and gladiolus that bloom along a stem spike, can mix with callalilies in limitation. Because of the similar shape of spike-type flowers and callalilies, too many stems detract and overwhelm the lily’s beauty and simplicity.

    Size

    • The size of the flowers you mix with callalilies is as important as the shape in creating a blended, visually interesting centerpiece. Large, round-shaped flowers, such as Asiatic lilies or gerbera daisies, emphasize the callalily’s delicate, simple shape. Smaller, round flowers, such as button chrysanthemums, Shasta daisies or asters, accent and highlight callalilies. A combination of small and large round flowers mixed with callalilies creates a dynamic, well-rounded centerpiece. The number of large flowers needs to be equal or less than the number of callalilies in the arrangement so as not to overwhelm the lily.

    Color

    • The color scheme you chose for the flowers in your centerpiece has an impact on how significant the callalilies are viewed in the arrangement. With the rainbow of colors available for callalilies, no longer do you need to settle for just white. Selecting a monochromatic or single-color scheme for the centerpiece creates a more formal, classic look, where all the flowers blend and no one species stands out. Adding only one other color, such as yellow lilies and bright pink gerbera daisies, creates a dramatic look emphasizing the callalilies. Whatever color scheme you choose, balance the colors throughout the arrangement.

    Design

    • The long stem of a calla lily naturally inspires tall, vertical floral arrangements. However, that design is not appropriate for centerpieces in many cases. To utilize the long stems, arrange one or two long callalilies projecting out vertically from the sides. Add several lilies with cut stems within the main centerpiece arrangement with other blooms tying the piece together. When mixing other flowers with callalilies, a mass or line arrangement design complements the lily and the flowers mixed with it.
