DIY Orange Tree Topiary

An orange tree topiary makes an ideal table centerpiece for a Halloween bash or a Thanksgiving dinner party. It also can be a festive table decoration to enhance a tropical-inspired birthday party or bridal shower. Create the topiary tree with sweet, edible items so that it can serve as guests' desserts or snacks as well. The trees also make thoughtful holiday and birthday gifts for friends and family members who love the color orange.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a square of floral foam to fit the bottom of an 8-inch terracotta plant pot using a craft knife. Place the foam into the pot.

    • 2

Cover a 12-inch wooden dowel with green acrylic craft paint and allow it to dry thoroughly. Insert one end of the dowel into the floral foam, and the other into the bottom of a 6-inch polystyrene ball.

    • 3

Cover the top of the floral foam with green plastic grass up to the rim of the pot.

    • 4

Insert one end of a toothpick into a soft orange candy, such as a gumdrop or sugared orange slice, and the other end into the polystyrene ball. You also may use kumquats, which are citrus fruits that look like tiny oranges. Press the toothpick into the ball so that the candy or fruit rests on top. Continue the process until the entire polystyrene ball is covered with orange candy or fruit.

    • 5

Tie an orange grosgrain ribbon around the wooden dowel, directly under the polystyrene ball, as a decorative touch.
