DIY Sunken Peony Centerpieces

Sunken flower centerpieces are sure to create a stir wherever you display them. Favored choices for weddings, submerged or sunken arrangements incorporate a variety of flowers including roses, lilies and peonies suspended in water. Almost any large-bloomed flower works, although some may need to have the pollen removed beforehand to prevent the water from clouding up. Peonies are especially beautiful in submerged centerpieces because the water acts as a magnifier to increase the size of the already massive peony bloom.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick your peonies fresh and hold the stems under running water to trim the ends to an angle. This helps them last longer.

    • 2

Fill your glass cylinder vase 3-inches high with the glass gems vase filler. Sprinkle a few pieces of colored sea glass around the tea light.

    • 3

Stagger two peony stems and wrap them together near the bottom with green floral wire, incorporating a length of fishing line with a weight attached at the end. Carefully position the peony inside the vase, using long-handled tongs to bury the weight under the vase filler.

    • 4

Tilt the vase and fill it gently with cold tap water. Tap water allows bubbles to form and cling to the peonies and leaves in a pleasing way. If you don't want bubbles in your centerpiece, use distilled water instead. Turn on the waterproof tealight and drop it on top.

    • 5

Position your cylinder vase in a corner of an old weathered wooden serving tray filled with a thin layer of beach sand.

    • 6

Scatter seashells and sea glass through the sand. Add two black pillar candles -- one taller than the other -- and prop a large starfish against them.
