Instructions for Silk Flower Arranging

Flower arrangements brighten every room and add a touch of style to weddings. If you love flowers, you’ll love today’s silk flowers, which are nearly indistinguishable from the real thing. Home decorators and brides are choosing silk flowers for arrangements because they provide not only a beautiful accent but a lasting memento or decorative feature.   Choose your silk flowers, keeping in mind the effect you want to create. Select blooms that complement each other. Most successful arrangements feature one or more focal flowers, around which the entire display centers. The focal blooms will draw the viewer’s eye and are usually larger and taller than the other flowers.

  Select a vase or container that accents the floral theme. For instance, a traditional crystal vase highlights a formal long-stem rose display but an antique watering can is more suitable for an informal wildflower selection. Your choice of container should accentuate the theme.

  Fill your vase with small polished rocks or glass floral beads to a height that will provide sufficient support for your silk flowers. The general rule is to fill tall vases at least halfway. For low-profile arrangements, you may need to use a foam floral form, secured to the bottom with glue or floral tape.

  Begin by placing your focal flowers. Odd numbers are more pleasing to the eye so use one, three or five, focal blooms, depending upon the size and type of your arrangement. Insert the tallest specimen near the middle of the arrangement and space the rest of the focal flowers evenly in the vase.

  Add intermediate flowers next. Intermediate silk flowers should fulfill two basic requirements: first, their height is approximately half as tall as the focal flowers, and second, their bloom size is half as large. Use intermediate flowers that complement the color and theme of your focal flowers and your container. In an autumn arrangement with sunflowers as your focal blooms, acceptable intermediate flowers might be daisies, dianthus, rudbeckia or chrysanthemums.

  Place your filler flowers next. Filler flowers serve the purpose of softening the entire arrangement and reducing gaps and spaces. You may choose more than one filler for your arrangement. For instance, use small blooms to disguise the base of the arrangement and create a “sprouting” effect. Use delicate but taller fillers, such as baby’s breath, sparingly inserted in between the focal and intermediate flowers to draw the viewer’s eye upward.

  Finish your silk flower arrangement with ribbons, bows or small garnishments that complement the theme.
