How to Arrange Carnations

Flowers are a wonderful way to add character and charm to any room in your house or apartment. They can be a muted backdrop to the activity of the room or they can be a bright batch of color that creates a focal point to draw attention. Carnations, which have long been a signal of love, devotion and admiration, are one of the easiest flowers to arrange. They can be combined with simple decorations or ornate designs. But either way, arranging them is easy to do.

Combine colors. When you are arranging flowers, it is important to arrange complimentary colors that contribute to the overall design. For example, you can arrange purple and yellow flowers for a contrast of deep color and light color. You can combine red, white and blue for a Fourth of July arrangement. You can combine blue and yellow, or red and pink or tented shades. This is where your creativity shows.

Add detail flowers. When you are arranging the carnations, add in baby's breath or other small compliment flowers to the arrangement to serve as the support for the main carnation arrangement.

Use green. Try adding in some stems of leaves or sprigs of green. Arrangements without green can be overpowering and slightly tacky.

Switch up vases. You do not always have to arrange flowers inside a glass or crystal vase. Try arranging the carnations in a small bucket, a piece of slim pottery or a glass mason jar. You can use different containers to show character and originality.

Add out-of-place things. Tailor the arrangement to the room it is going to be in. If it is going to be in the kitchen, try adding in old-fashioned wooden utensils like a stirring spoon to the arrangement. If it is in the mud room, add a rain gauge or garden spike. You can make the arrangement define the room.
