Use of Wood in Floral Arrangements

Using wood in a floral arrangement gives a rustic touch to the display. Accenting with wood brings nature indoors. Take a nature walk and look for interesting objects to add to floral centerpieces. Before using any wood that you find, check for insects that may be hiding in crevices.
  1. Tree Blossoms

    • Spring is a great time to take a few cuttings from nearby trees. Most regions of the country have trees--such as redbud, cherry, dogwood--that produce blossoms before leaves appear. Using branches with pink or white blooms will dress up any floral arrangement. Use a large-mouth vase or container, because the cuttings will take up a lot of room. Fresh tulips mixed with the tree blossoms will make a beautiful display for the center of your table. Daffodils have long stems and would also make a perfect choice to pair with tree blossoms. White blossoms and yellow daffodils will cheer up any room.

    Pussy Willows

    • Pussy willows are so beautiful that they can stand alone in an arrangement, but adding a few long-stemmed flowers will give you a fantastic decoration. Gerber daisies with long stems in a tall vase would be a stunning display in an entrance hall. Attach a velvet ribbon in a soft brown to complement the pussy willow bud. A purple iris is another long-stemmed flower that will look lovely with pussy willow branches. Consider a velvet violet ribbon to draw attention to the iris.

    Vines

    • Grape vines can be purchased at craft stores, but if you have them in your region you can gather your own supply. Purchased vines often come in a wreath shape and can be laid flat as a base. Drop the wreath over the top of the vase and garnish the wreath with fall leaves for an autumn theme. Artificial leaves may be more substantial than real leaves. Finish this centerpiece with chrysanthemums in a variety of colors.

Wreaths can also be hung for a winter holiday decoration. Insert fresh holly sprigs into the wreath; they will stay fresh-looking for several days. Weave a ribbon around the wreath or tie a bow onto it.

Wreaths can be used again with other arrangements. Remove any fresh decorations and store them in a dry area until the next season.
