Easy Centerpiece Ideas

Centerpieces brighten up a table and give the home gardener or flower enthusiast a broad canvas for simple or elaborate self-expression. Other materials also belong on the table: A dish of pretty, clean seashells, luscious produce from a farmers market, or a favorite collectible can be part of an easy and inexpensive centerpiece for everyday display. A large platter, charger or shallow metal bowl makes a nice base for the centerpiece, and protects tables and linens from "sweaty" containers on hot days.
  1. From the Ocean

    • Create a simple arrangement of ocean sea shells by rinsing away sand and scrubbing in soap and water. Mix equal parts water and household chlorine bleach to remove fishy smells. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry before arranging. A tall clear vessel with a lid or top makes an interesting vertical display. Place in the center of the table.

    From the Garden

    • Cutting gardens offer substantial material for inexpensive, easy centerpieces. Vary the heights of flowers and match the sizes of stems and blooms to the container you are using. Top-heavy sunflowers look best arranged alone, as do tall, spiky gladioli. Delicate daisies, zinnias and autumn asters look best in smaller containers with the flowers cut to varying heights.

    From Collections

    • Collectibles make interesting centerpieces, and inspire conversation. Holiday centerpieces can be made from carved wooden nutcrackers, Santa figures or interesting glass ornaments. Arrange them on a plate or charger or in a bowl.

    Around the House

    • Pillar candles, arranged according to height or in mixed sizes, make an easy centerpiece. Stick to one color or create a seasonal arrangement with a mixture of colors such as red, yellow and orange for autumn harvest.

    From the Farmers Market

    • Fresh fruit or vegetables can make a bountiful centerpiece. Select unblemished items and a hand-painted container or simple crate to display nature's bounty. Deep green artichokes and tangerines or clementines work well together. Whole pineapples surrounded by smaller fruits like kumquats, lemons or limes make an appetizing centerpiece.
