Decorating with flower arrangements for a holiday should reflect that holiday theme and color. Long stemmed flowers in a vase as a centerpiece on a dining table or entry table lends a quiet elegance to a room. Place long stemmed peace lilies in a vase for Easter, red and white roses for Christmas, yellow and orange roses for Thanksgiving or Halloween.
Instead of a long vase, consider small bowl of water filled with any number of flower petals. Alternatively, place pebbles in the bottom of the bowl and place cuttings of ivy into the rocks. Ivy grows well in water and makes a nice centerpiece.
Add potted plants of various types in a basket. Use daisies, ivy, small palms and orchids in a decorative basket along with holiday ribbons. Dried flowers of any type placed in various sized baskets for the deck and steps create a homey and welcoming atmosphere to the outdoors.
Add a pumpkin in the middle of the flower arrangement for fall or a small round watermelon in a picnic basket arrangement for summer.
Pick a favorite plant or flower of a family member or friend and use it as the focal point of the flower arrangement. Use a basket, canister, decorative bowl or planter pot and place the desired flowers inside with photos, recipes, plant seeds, figurines or any other special gift.
Much needed household items that others request are used in flower arrangements as well. Even though the gift itself may be boring, spruce it up with flowers and an accompanying item that is used with the household item. For instance, if a family member has been requesting a blender, purchase the blender, remove it from the packaging and add a margarita mix, fresh fruit, ice cream topping or other items to the blender itself. Use a large basket and place the blender in the bottom of the basket, lengthwise if necessary. Fill around the blender with a profusion of colorful flowers and small potted plants.
