How to Arrange a Flower Frog

A flower frog is a device or "mechanic" that holds flowers and plants in place in a vase or container. These whimsically named objects are helpful aids for creating floral arrangements. Flower frogs are generally of two types. Pinholders are essentially weighted pincushions placed at the container's bottom. Because of their weight, flowers can be placed at any angle, making it perhaps the most versatile flower holder. Glass or porcelain frogs are containers with holes on the surface. Often found in playful shapes such as frogs and turtles, they appeal to collectors. Their drawback is the holes have straight sides that hold the stems in a rigidly upright position.

Things You'll Need

  • Plant material such as flowers, foliage, berries, twigs and ornamental grasses
  • Containers such as vases, bowls, pitchers or teacups
  • Flower frog (pincushion type recommended)
  • Floral snips or scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Place the flower frog in the bottom of the container. A bit of floral adhesive stuck to the bottom keeps the device from moving and potentially scratching the container.

    • 2

Re-cut the stems of the plant material on an angle before positioning on the frog. This allows the plant to draw in more water.

    • 3

Establish the focal point. Beautiful arrangements have a center of interest, such as a tall flower spike, a striking bloom or an interesting branch or stem.

    • 4

Draw an imaginary line from the top of the arrangement to the bottom of the container, then another from side to side to help determine the shape of the arrangement. Most arrangements fall into three categories: asymmetrical, triangular or rounded. Adjust the flower frog if necessary.

    • 5

Working from side to side, fill in with the other flowers and materials, using just enough to establish the desired shape. Good fillers include smaller blossoms, unopened buds, berries, foliage and ornamental grasses.
