How to Make Succulent Floral Arrangements

A succulent is a hearty plant variety characterized by its ability to store water in its leaves, an adaptation that gives these exotic plants the ability to endure prolonged periods of drought. Besides being low-maintenance, they also come in hundreds of eye-catching varieties. Good looks and the ability to survive neglect make these ornamental plants an ideal choice for people who enjoy decorating with flowers and plants, but have little success keeping delicate plant and flower arrangements alive. Use two or three colorful succulents and decorative sand or gravel to create succulent floral arrangements that will outlast any bouquet.

    • 1

Set aside the plant(s) that will be the focal point of your arrangement. You will want to place the featured plant(s) last.

    • 2

Pour sand into the container, leaving 1 to 3 inches at the top for gravel. Top the sand with about 1 inch of gravel.

    • 3

Press the roots of a few of the green succulents down into the sand at the perimeter of the container. This will lay the foundation for brighter-hued, contrasting plants to be added later.

    • 4

Insert additional succulents in between the green plants, working your way toward the center. Choose plants that contrast or complement the green varieties. Leave just enough space for the featured plant(s) to fit snugly into the container.

    • 5

Place the centerpiece plant(s) at or near the center of the arrangement. Make sure the roots make contact with the sand.

    • 6

Water the arrangement until the sand is saturated. To maintain the arrangement, wait until the sand dries completely, and then add just enough water to moisten the sand.
