How to Make a Rose Flower Arrangement

Roses are a good choice for arrangements because of their long-lasting flowers and sturdy stems. Making flower arrangements at home is relatively easy and inexpensive; they can be created for weddings, dinner parties and other special occasions. Fresh or silk flowers can be used, although fresh flowers add fragrance along with natural beauty to any arrangement.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a vase or container to use for the rose arrangement. The width and height will depend on how large or small you want the arrangement. Using containers other the typical glass vase can make the rose arrangement more fanciful and appealing. Be sure to wash out the vase or container thoroughly with hot soapy water and rinse well before using.

    • 2

Fill the vase or container about halfway with water and add flower food, available at local florists, to help prolong the life of the roses. Floral foam may be needed in containers that are shallow or if the roses need extra support to stay upright. When using floral foam, soak beforehand in water to completely saturate it and omit the water.

    • 3

Select the roses that you wish to use, choosing a color or colors that coordinate with the event they are destined for or to match your home decor. Use roses in various stages of maturity, some slightly closed and others opened completely.

    • 4

Cut off any leaves on the stems that will be below the water line in the vase or container. There is no need to cut off any thorns from the stems. Cut the stems at a 45-degree angle for better water absorption so the roses last longer in the arrangement.

    • 5

Arrange the roses in the vase or container by placing taller flowers in the center. Gradually add shorter roses out around the edges of the arrangement creating a full arrangement.

    • 6

Add filler flowers if desired such as, baby's breath, Queen Anne's lace, statice or asters. Place filler flowers in between the roses liberally to give softness and fullness to the arrangement. Also add greenery such as ferns, magnolia leaf or beargrass. The greenery can be placed around the outside edge of the arrangement to frame the roses or scattered within the roses for a striking contrast to the rose colors.
